5 Cybersecurity Resolutions to Implement in the New Year

In January, it’s easy to set New Year’s resolutions that we want to accomplish. For your business, it’s the perfect time to implement cybersecurity resolutions that keep data safe and operations moving smoothly. Set one or more of these cybersecurity resolutions this year.

1. Create Backup Files

What would happen if key files for your business were stolen or corrupted? Would your business be able to function? We all know that it’s important to regularly create backup files that could help us restore information and systems. It’s also easy to get bogged down with daily business activities and forget. Commit to scheduling regular times to backup your data, whether to your vendor’s archive system or to an external hard-drive. Don’t only rely on your IT department to make copies of your data.

2. Foster Redundancy

Redundancy means that if a system or component fails, there’s a backup system in place that can fill in its place. Ideally, your company has multiple ways to accomplish daily tasks or access information. For instance, if your billing system crashed, how would you send out an invoice? If your primary CRM tool went down, how would employees find a customer’s phone number? There needs to be an established system for handling these types of scenarios. This may be as simple as having contingency policies in place and letting the appropriate people know about them.

3. Invest in Cybersecurity Solutions

It’s easy to put off migrating data over to a VPN or switching your current enterprise level antivirus solution. If you have a solution that works, there isn’t an urgent need to spend the money or time on an improved solution. (Though you’ll wish you had if you encounter an IT security situation that could have been prevented if you switched). Make a timeline for finding, evaluating and implementing a new cybersecurity solution, so you’ll be more likely to follow through with it.

4. Schedule Employee Training

You likely have some employee cybersecurity training as part of your new hire onboarding process. This should include an overview of your company’s IT policies and how to prevent social engineering attacks from happening on IT networks, such as when a hacker sends a convincing email campaign soliciting user email passwords. It’s important to schedule regular employee training for your existing employees, at least annually. Weigh the benefits of creating a customized training program specific to your company against buying a third party version.

5. Review Vendor Privacy Policies

Make sure that your vendors utilize industry-leading privacy and cybersecurity policies that protect your data. Get updated copies of vendor policies and ask what measures they have in place to protect your company’s information. This will help keep your company’s data protected from hackers and competitors.

The beginning of a new year is always full of fresh starts. When you prioritize your company’s cybersecurity, you promote a more secure computing environment throughout the entire year.
